Everything You Need to Know About Maternity Workout Clothes: Part 3 - Mumberry

We’re onto Part 3 of our series!  Today we’re talking about fit. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all about that bass…it’s all about that FIT! Making sure your workout apparel is the correct fit for your body is just as important as gravity….or paying your taxes…or watching The Bachelor. Listen, we like analogies. I think you get it. Correct fit is super important!

As your bump grows, it may be difficult to find clothing that fits properly and gives you adequate support. Many women resort to baggy sweatpants or their husband’s basketball shorts. These clothes may be great for sitting around, but are doing your growing belly no favors when you’re moving.  Loose-fitting clothing is for lounging, not lunging!

Here’s what to keep in mind when choosing maternity workout wear:

  1. Support. Look for pregnancy apparel that fits snuggly around your belly to help provide support. Your body is trying to adjust to carrying around that extra bundle and any type of support you can get will be helpful. Wearing clothes with no support means you’re expounding more energy to carry the extra weight, making it harder for you to keep up your exercise routine.

  2. Safety. Loose-fitting apparel can be a safety hazard, especially at the gym. The clothing can get snagged or caught on something. It can also get in your way and make it difficult to check your form and posture. During pregnancy, nothing is more important than keeping you and your baby safe while exercising.   3. Coverage. While those baggy clothes may seem to cover everything, they can be deceivingly revealing. Sometimes the clothing can actually bare more skin on the belly, back, and legs during certain movements or poses. Remember how in Part 2 we talked about the importance of not mooning others? When you’re secure in the proper apparel, you’ll have peace of mind during your workout.

  4. Temperature. Look for pregnancy apparel that is made of moisture-wicking fabrics. Those sweatpants are only going to make you hotter, and not in a good way. Staying cool during your workout will CHANGE EVERYTHING! Yes, sweating is good…but overheating your body is not! We talked about the importance of fabrics in Part 1 of our series, so by now we’re all experts. Let’s keep it cool, ladies!
